Hugues Fontaine produced the magnificent dual language book documenting the history of the Djibouti-Addis Ababa railway, Un Train En Afrique / African Train, in 2012. More recently, October 2019, he published Arthur Rimbaud Photographe, a French language book about Rimbaud’s photographic experiences in Abyssinia. His latest work, published in January 2020, is Menelik, a history of Menelik II told through contemporary photographs and illustrations. English, French and Amharic versions of the book are available.

At the end of the 19th century, the high plateaux of Abyssinia attracted explorers from the all over the world. A number of them carried photographic equipment. They recorded the first images of the country of the King of Showa, Menelik II, who became the King of Kings of Ethiopia in November 1889.

Hugues will talk about these early photographs and illustrations of Menelik, and his work in collecting them together to produce his new book.
